あるとき鹿の息子が親父（おやじ）に言った。

＜お父さん、 お父さんは犬よりも体（からだ）は大きいし力もありそう。それに防御のための立派な角もあるのにどうして犬をこわがるの？＞

親父は苦笑しながら言った。

＜息子よ、残念だお前の言うとおりだよ。犬がほえるのを聞いただけで無意識のうちに逃げ出してしまうのだよ。＞

Ланчук сказал раз оленю:
«Батюшка, ты и больше и резвее собак, да еще и рога у тебя огромные на защиту; отчего же ты так боишься собак?»
Олень засмеялся и говорит:
«Правду говоришь, дитятко. Одна беда: как только услышу собачий лай, не успею подумать, а уж бегу».

The Fawn and His Mother

A YOUNG FAWN once said to his Mother, "You are larger than a dog, and swifter, and more used to running, and you have your horns as a defense; why, then, O Mother! do the hounds frighten you so?" She smiled, and said: "I know full well, my son, that all you say is true. I have the advantages you mention, but when I hear even the bark of a single dog I feel ready to faint, and fly away as fast as I can."

THE DEER AND HIS MOTHER
A story about a deer, urging that advice should be given by a person who is also capable of action.
The deer was being lectured by his mother, 'Why do you act this way, my child? You have been naturally endowed with horns, and you are powerfully built, so I cannot understand why you run away at the approach of the dogs.' That is what the mother said. Then, when she heard the sound of the hunting dogs in the distance, she again urged her child to stand firm while she herself took off at a run.
It is easy to advise action which cannot be carried out. 

Variation 2) と似た話では＜カニの母と子＞の話がある。

カニのお母さんが息子に言った。

＜お前、なんで横に歩いたり走ったりばかりしているんだ。前にむかって進んだほうがいいじゃやないか。＞

カニの息子が行った。

＜それじゃあ、母さん、 前にむかって進んでいるところを見せておくれ。＞

カニのお母さんは何ども前にむかって進もうとしたがついに出来なかった。
